About Simon Chan

Simon Chan has used his knowledge of the internet to build a global network marketing business in over 14 countries that generates over $25 million USD in annual sales. He has almost a decade of experience in the MLM industry, and has become an expert at showing others how to use the internet to build a successful network marketing business regardless of their past experience.

Simon Chan never had any sales nor business experience and says he got “lucky in striking gold in his first try” because of his knowledge of the internet and also how he applied the 9 Point Checklist on how to choose a home business. While others were just connecting their computers to the internet and figuring out how to use their new email accounts Simon was driving tons of traffic to his website from all across the globe, capturing their emails, and signing them up in his primary business.

Simon Chan believes that everyone is born with unlimited potential but often our potential is locked up due to our environment and lack of opportunity. In this day of age, anyone can be successful through self development but our path to success can be accelerated when you have the right mentor.

Today, Simon Chan helps people fulfill their dreams by coaching them how to build a successful network marketing home business in the 5 Star MLM Academy.

Simon Chan’s Early Years

Simon Chan was born and raised in New York City and grew up as a shy and quiet kid who had low self esteem. His parents were immigrants from Hong Kong and Chinese Mandarin was Simon’s first language.  Simon’s lisp along with the insecurity from learning English as a second language Simon felt that no one would want to play with him because he spoke “funny.” Simon had a hard time communicating because he was afraid that other kids would make fun of him because of the way he sounded. When Simon first met one of his best friends in college, his friend initially thought he was from England or some other European country because of Simon’s weird accent and lisp.

Simon Chan’s shyness lasted throughout college and he never really partied nor had a girlfriend until he was 25. The only good news was that his lack of social life allowed him to focus on studying and playing sports.

Through hard work, he graduated from Stuyvesant High School and was able to attend an Ivy League university and graduated from Columbia College. However, his shyness always held him back. Simon still remembers taking the mandatory liberal arts courses in college (Columbia Core Curriculum) where class participation would account for 25% of the grade. In those classes, he would decide to settle for a lower grade and just sit in the back of the class just so that he did not need to speak up.

Simon Chan’s First Job

Simon Chan is a huge sports fan and after college he was able to get the perfect “dream job” working at the NBA. (National Basketball Association). In his sports career, Simon has attended over 200 NBA Games live including 6 NBA All-Star Games and 4 NBA Finals. In 2002, Simon Chan became a certified NBA Player Agent and had his first client. He was like “Jerry Maguire.”

Simon loves basketball and loved the NBA. Despite his success as a business owner and network marketing leader, Simon never really wanted to be an entrepreneur. All he wanted was to work and devote his whole life to the NBA. Even though his salary was low, Simon loved his job so much that he put in long hours and could remember at least 12 nights where he worked such long hours that he slept in one of the conference rooms at the NBA corporate office in Secaucus, New Jersey. Sleeping at work was easier than making the 2 hour round trip commute and be back at the office early in the morning.

After 8 years working in the NBA, the reality of having a job hit Simon as the “dream job” started to get old. As he got older and the daily financial responsibilities in life increased, Simon realized that he was devoting all his time to help the NBA and its players become wealthy and nothing for himself. More importantly, his job consumed him and Simon had no time to do the things he wanted in life.

The NBA job brought back memories of Simon’s childhood. His dad was a successful doctor with his own medical practice and they were well off and lived in a big house with 3 Mercedes Benz. But Simon’s most memorable moments as a kid was when he got to play baseball with his father. Simon had always loved sports and dreamed to play for the New York Yankees. His heroes were Craig Nettles, Ron Guidry and Don Mattingly. All he wanted to do was play baseball and go to Yankees Stadium. One day, his father suddenly stopped playing baseball with him because he was too busy at his medical practice and the hospitals. Simon still remembers that day because he will never forget the disappointment. The nice house and the luxury cars mean nothing to a 10 year old. All he wanted to do was play baseball with his father. Baseball was Simon’s dream and his life.

Looking back, Simon is very grateful for his father and how he did his best to raise the family. But as a 10 year old, Simon did not understand why seeing patients was more important than playing baseball with your son. Wasn’t baseball more fun?! Simon was bitter at his father and one of his goals growing up was that when he has a family, he wants to be able to spend time with them. Unfortunately in 2003, with his busy “dream job”, Simon saw himself going down the same path as his dad did. Simon Chan realized that something had to change and reluctantly, he started to look for a new career.

After reading the books Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Multiple Streams of Income by Robert G. Allen, Simon realized the significance of 2 things – Time and Passive Income. Time is our biggest asset and since we are all on this earth for a limited time, we need to take action immediately. Passive Income is income that keeps coming in even if you are NOT working (for example, like royalties or real estate rental income). Simon learned that it is only through passive income that we can have the TIME to do the things we want and live the life we deserve.

Passive Income is working smarter so that you have money and more importantly, the time to enjoy the money. Simon realized that his NBA job would never provide him both time and money. Only a business could allow Simon to do that. But… Simon did not know what type of business to choose. Simon Chan initially considered opening a Subway sandwich store because he liked the franchise model that provided a proven product with training system. However, he learned that the initial investment for a Subway store was over $250,000 USD and Simon did not have that kind of money. Even if Simon did have the money, Simon did not want to invest that amount in a store that would take 2 – 3 years to break even.
So Simon Chan kept on researching and shopping for the business that would be a good fit for him…

Simon Discovers his “Purpose Driven Life”

In 2003, around the same time he was looking into different businesses, Simon Chan read “The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren and that book had a big impact on his life.  After reading and going through the 40 days of exercises, Simon Chan felt that God’s purpose for him in this world was to “have a positive impact in as many people’s lives as possible.” After much reflection, that purpose made sense because even though Simon was always shy and quiet, deep down he always enjoyed mentoring others; whether it was helping the youth fellowship at church, being a big brother to a kid that needed guidance or helping coach youth basketball clinics. Simon felt God spoke to him and he went out to seek a business that would allow him to fulfill his purpose. After much research, Simon Chan discovered that network marketing would allow him to help others and achieve financial freedom at the same time. Furthermore, network marketing was similar to the franchise model in many ways (proven product along with training system) but without the high investment and risks involved.

How Simon Chan Became Successful

A major challenge that Simon immediately faced when he started his network marketing business in 2003 was that he had just moved to Los Angeles from New York City. Simon did not have many contacts in Los Angeles and also could not present the business opportunity to the people he knew 3000 miles (5000 km) away in New York City. These challenges drew Simon to become a pioneer in internet marketing because the internet allowed him to find and present his opportunity to people worldwide. While most people in the industry were using offline newspaper ads to find prospects and recorded conference calls to present, Simon was trailblazing by using online Pay Per Click advertising to find interested prospects worldwide and conducting webinars to present to those prospects. In fact, only 1 out of his first 10 sponsorships were from the Los Angeles area. The other 9 were from New York City, Missouri, Texas, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Utah and Hong Kong.

As the internet allowed Simon to grow his business into different cities across the United States, his initial success and love for travel naturally led him to expand his business to international markets. Simon was able to use many of the same internet marketing strategies to find motivated foreign prospects and expanded into the new markets. This gave Simon a huge advantage and allowed him to be one of the first associates in each of the markets that his company opened up. Today, Simon Chan has one of the largest and fastest growing international teams and they have a strong presence in the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan and Australia.

As the countries around the world continue to develop, Simon Chan plans to spend more time helping others achieve financial success in international markets. Simon already has plans to travel and help those who live in India, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Internet Alone does NOT make you Successful

Simon soon learned in 2004 that the internet alone can NOT help you build a successful network marketing business. You also need to learn how to communicate properly and incorporate offline strategies to help create the duplication you need in your downlines. Without these skills, even if you can find 50 motivated prospects online everyday, they will be useless.

Success happens the quickest when you combine “high tech with high touch.” For example, you can use internet marketing (high tech) to find your prospects and use face to face meetings (high touch) to build the relationships and do your trainings. Another example is using automated online messages (high tech) to seek out new associates but you use Skype (high touch) for 1 on 1 personal communication. In the end, network marketing is all about relationships.

Creating a Time Management Regimen for Home Business Owners

One of the challenges that Simon faced early on was time management. Simon very quickly learned that we all love to be our own boss but unfortunately many of us also forget that to have a successful network marketing home business, we also have to be our own EMPLOYEE as well. We excel at being the boss but unfortunately fail terribly with being our own employee. Without a real boss to guide us, it is easy for the new home business owner to become distracted in activities that do not generate immediate income. For example, such as answering emails, spending too much time on Facebook, talking too much time to bad prospects, or doing low end administrative work like tidying your desk, etc.

As a result of Simon’s mistakes and what he learned from them, Simon developed his EXTREME MLM PRODUCTIVITY REGIMEN that is designed specifically for home business owners. This system not only keeps Simon focused but it helps other network marketing business owners to properly manage their daily activities so that they maximize their time and income.
